American tennis star Coco Gauff parted ways with coach Matt Daly and hires biomechanics specialist Gavin MacMillan hoping for a win at US Open 2025. This sudden move comes as Gauff looks to address persistent issues with her serve. It has been a weakness that has been evident in recent matches.

The New Addition: Gavin MacMillan
MacMillan is a well-regarded expert in biomechanics and is widely credited with helping world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka fix her serve. It was once a major liability for Aryna. Sabalenka’s dramatic improvement after working with MacMillan is a key reason for Gauff’s decision. Gauff, who has hit more than 320 double faults this year alone, is hoping MacMillan can work his “magic” on her game as well. MacMillan was already spotted on court with Gauff at the US Open, indicating that the partnership is already underway.

A Sudden but Strategic Decision
While the timing of the split with Daly, just days before a Grand Slam, may seem unusual, Gauff has stated that the decision was a “very sudden” one made because MacMillan became available. Despite the success she had with Daly, which included a French Open title, Gauff said she is thinking “long term”. She felt the need to make a technical change to her game. She believes MacMillan’s experience with similar serving issues will be invaluable.
This isn’t the first time Gauff has made a major coaching change at a pivotal moment. Last year, she parted ways with coach Brad Gilbert after her US Open title defense ended prematurely. Gauff continues to work with her longtime coach, Jean-Christophe Faurel.

A Race Against Time
The US Open, where Gauff is the defending 2023 champion, is here. While she hopes to see quick improvements. She acknowledges that it’s a process and she has the rest of the season to work on it. Her goal is to not “waste time continuing doing the wrong things.” This calculated risk demonstrates Gauff’s determination to fine-tune her game and get back to the top of her form.
MacMillan’s work with Sabalenka proved that technical flaws can be corrected, even under immense pressure. Gauff is betting that with MacMillan’s help, she can overcome her serving struggles and add another Grand Slam trophy to her collection.
